The family's origin would be Nepal. Five ways I would prepare myself to be culturally responsive would be to do the following:
Gain background knowledge on their country of origin
Learn some linguistics to use for basic communication
Prepare documents needed in home language
Make the child care environment open to diverse families
Make sure other staff meet and greet family in a non invasive manner
I hope doing these things will help the.family understand we are open to diversity and providing their child with a successful school year.
Tierra,
ReplyDeleteI like that your post was very concise. I think learning some basic language, preparing necessary documents in the family's home language, and working with the staff to provide a culturally responsive classroom are great ideas. I wonder about what background knowledge you would research about Nepal to be culturally responsive to the family while digging deeper than the surface culture? Thanks.
Hello Tierra,
ReplyDeleteI think you kept it short and sweet and every area you covered are very important to allowing a smooth transition for the child and family to a completely new culture. Especially making sure that the staff are non invasive toward the family members. Very good post with insightful information.
Hi Tierra,
ReplyDeleteI like how you chose to have the family meet other staff. I believe this also gives the family a chance to meet others in whom they may also feel comfortable communicating information with just in case you as the main teacher were not available. Also learning some words in their language would show the family that you are okay with them being there by attempting to make them feel welcome in their native language.
Great Key Points!
Tierra, I like that you mentioned preparing documents in home languages. I actually did this a few years ago in spanish using google translator! Great idea!!
ReplyDeleteTierra,
ReplyDeleteIn introducing the entire staff to the family, it helps ease tension and the family is aware that the entire staff is ready and available to assist in their transition. Preparing documentation in their native language also helps in learning of the basic common words as well for staff members. Excellent points to incorporate in preparing the center for new students and their families.
