I chose to reflect on assessments in South Africa. From my research I find that assessments in school have been hard to come by because two reasons ,according to Amod & Heafield, "this is firstly due to the historical misuse of assessment instruments for the purpose of exclusionary practices and the perpetuation of an inequitable education system. Secondly children in this country exist within extremely diverse socio-cultural and economic structures and this contributes towards significant emotional and developmental differences between young children." Amod & Heafield also state, "although there is still a place for the assessment of individual learners to determine the types of support structures that may be needed, government expenditure on education is more suitably spent on upgrading facilities, reducing class sizes and improving teacher training. This will provide all learners with a better chance of reaching their full potential. "

Tierra,
ReplyDeleteI too believe that assessments should a measurement of individual growth. Seeing their own progress is more empowering and positive than feeling like a failure because they did not achieve as much as another child. That is sad that South Africa misused assessments for exclusion purposes. Maybe through spending money to increase teacher training and reducing class sizes, improvements will be seen within individual assessments. Teachers will know more what to look for and how to teach appropriately and include everyone. Smaller class sizes will help to do this and reduce the stress on the teacher as well. Maybe we can see improvements in the future!
Thanks for sharing,

Tierra,
ReplyDeletei do agree with you that class sizes should be small for each teacher. his way each child can have the proper support from the teacher that they need. I just feel as though we give way to much pressure on a test to really see if children are learning what they should and i think that they should find a different way to act on it. Thanks for your en site on South Africa I also love learning about different places and they way they do things.
